Bronze-age Ireland has bequeathed an impressive quantity of horns. (...) An experiment was carried out in March 1857 by Robert Ball of Dublin (1802-57) on an instrument in the National Museum of Ireland, during which he attempted to produce high pitches of trumpet-like quality - assuming the instrument to have been used in this manner. The repeated efforts resulted in a burst blood-vessel, which caused his premature death.
