“Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill – The Merfolk Cycle of Irish Poetry”
Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill is one of Ireland’s best-known contemporary female poets. At the age of sixteen, she made a conscious decision to compose poetry through the medium of Irish, he ancestral language of the Irish people. On the one hand, her 'Merfolk Cycle' of Irish poetry draws on folklore and ancient myths of Ireland, but it presents on the other the veryday plight of Irish women in the years before the 'Celtic Tiger' economic boom. This lecture will be accompanied by recordings of Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill reading her compositions online and by digitised appraisals of her poetry by leading Irish literary critics.
